2024 River Cleanup in Review
In 2024, the River Cleanup Program aimed to restore and protect the Spokane River through coordinated efforts that involved local communities, volunteers, partner organizations, and city officials. Over the course of the year, we successfully removed 67,110lbs of trash with the help of 2,318 volunteers during 129 clean up events. This report highlights our major accomplishments, challenges, and the impact of our efforts, setting the stage for continued progress in the coming year.
The Spokane River has long been a vital resource for our community and the surrounding environment. However, a history of pollution and trash has severely impacted the River’s water quality, habitat, and visual appeal. The River Cleanup Program launched in 2016 engaging the public to participate in River Cleanup efforts to reduce trash pollution. This program aimed to tackle the pressing environmental issues surrounding the River, including trash, illegal dumping, potentially harmful waste, and to inspire community members to take an active role in preserving this precious natural resource.
